Santorini is the supermodel of Greek islands. It attracts over 1.5 million tourists annually, a quite large number, considering how small the island is. The island is one of the top destinations in the world and can be quite crowded during high season. Most visitors prefer July and August. However, when is the best time to visit Santorini though?
The answer depends on what you are after and what is more important. Do you want to visit Santorini in the low season when it’s cheaper? Do you want to go to Santorini for the best weather? Do you want to travel to Santorini when there’s fewer tourists?
If you’re planning a trip to Santorini, you’ll want to choose your date carefully.
The best time to visit Santorini is from September to October and April to May. The weather is warm and sunny with clear blue skies. The average temperature is about 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) and is quite unlikely to rain. In September it basically is still summer, however not that crowded like June, July and August. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast. You will be exploring Fira, Oia, Imerovigli wandering in the narrow streets of the Caldera, wearing T-shirts and shorts. Wear your swimsuit, go and visit the beaches in Kamari and Perissa. During night you might need a light jacket.
Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination. Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Many businesses and hotels on Santorini remain open throughout the year and our Panorama Day Cruises run daily through the off peak season!
